IMPORTANT FACTS REGARDING TRIDACNA CLAMS
  • Tridacna clams being mainly photosynthetic, require a well lit aquarium in order to thrive. In many cases they can survive under lower lighting levels however they will probably turn brown in color.

    • Crocea clams require the most light of the three varieties we carry, and should be kept in tanks that use Metal Halide lighting.
    • Maxima clams also require alot of light; Metal Halide lighting being preferable, but may be kept in a tank using VHO bulbs, if placed near the surface.
    • Derasa & Squamosa clams require the least amount of lighting, and usually do best if placed in the sand of a well lit aquarium.

  • Tridacna clams will do much better in a tank that is established. It is not recommended to place them in an aquarium that has just been started.

  • Be very careful where you place your Tridacna clams. Once in the tank, croceas and maximas will attach themselves to the rock with their byssal organ (the clam's "foot"). In many cases, if you try to move the clam after being attached, you will damage the foot, and kill the clam.

  • Tridacna clams will use a large amount of calcium that they get from your aquarium water. Ensure that you have the ability to maintain an appropriate calcium level in your aquarium. Low calcium levels result in a poor growth rates.

  • These are just a few points about tridacna clams.
We highly recommend reading "Giant Clams in the Aquarium" by James Fatherree.
