Overflows and sumps are absolutely vital pieces of equipment for the hard/soft plumbed reef aquarium. When sizing your overflow ensure it can handle a flow rate of approx 6x the system volume per hour. This way you have about twice the minimum capacity needed. Of course you can always increase, but at the cost of additional noise and power consumed.

Sumps are best as wide as possible. High flow rates through the sump will only serve to hold micro bubbles and cause clarity problems down the road. In general, the larger the sump the better (extra water volume) suited it is.
