Lighting for the marine aquarium is one of the limiting factors that will determine what type of animals your system will support. Plants and animals need a certain amount of light to have a healthy existence. In an aquarium, "natural" light is supplied by advanced artificial light technology. The energy from light is used by green plants and algae to produce the food that plants and animals utilize. By choosing and applying the proper aquarium lighting system, to enhance photosynthesis, any type of aquarium life, be it fresh, marine or reef, will flourish. Your aquarium's lighting system must accomplish two distinct tasks: First, the lighting that you choose must have the ability to sustain life and the specific functions of that life of your aquarium inhabitants. Second, the lighting system that you choose must make your aquarium visually appealing to you, the viewer.
Illuminate your tank every two feet with one Metal Halide Bulb. Each bulb requires a separate ballast that must be matched to the wattage of the bulb you are using. "K", refers to the color temperature of the light measured in oKelvin. A lower Kelvin rating indicates a warmer light source whose spectrum is more towards the yellow end. A higher Kelvin rating indicates a cooler source of lighting that emphasizes the blue end of the spectrum.
There are many diffferent types of ballasts and bulb types on the market today. In all of our lighting systems, we have matched the bulb and ballast to give you the best combination. When choosing your lighting system, refer to the chart below to see what types of bulbs you may run on your ballast when it comes time to change them.
