SOFT CORAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • Question: "How much light do these corals need?"
Answer: In most cases mushrooms, polyps, and some finger corals can get by with regular fluorescent lighting. However they will do better under VHO/PC Lighting.

  • Question: "Why does my toadstool close and look waxy?"
Answer: This is a common occurrence and is part of the natural growth cycle of the animal. Make sure you keep it in a relatively high flow area to help it shed this waxy mucous.

  • Question: "Will my mushrooms stay blue/red?"
Answer: Under higher light levels (PC/Metal Halide) yes. Under Normal output fluorescent lighting it depends on the individual coral and placement. Under lower lighting levels the coral will have to expand more in order to get enough light. This expansion causes the coral to appear less colorful as the pigments are more dispersed. Under higher levels of light the coral does not have to open as much keeping it's pigments closer together, and thus giving the impression of more color.

  • Question: "Should I feed my polyps?"
Answer: J&L Aquatics recommends that you feed all of your corals. Most corals can survive on light alone but will do much better if fed. Some foods that are great for corals include Phytoplankton, Baby Brine shrimp (Enriched preferred), or finely minced various fish foods.

  • Question: "How "Yellow" is "Yellow"?"
Answer: Most Soft corals are not brightly colored. When sold as yellow or gold they will have a yellow or gold hue. The exception to this are the sarcophyton corals from Fiji & Tonga which are vibrantly colored yellow and green.

  • Question: "What sizes are the mushrooms?"
Answer: Size varies dependent on a couple of factors. Physical size of the rock they are attached to, and number of mushrooms. A bigger piece of rock with fewer mushrooms will be classified the same size as a smaller piece with many mushrooms on it.
